Within the Duplicates series, I am interested in constructing pieces that test the viewers eye, presenting pairs of objects that are seemingly identical or similar at first glance. Upon closer inspection, there is a subtle difference in medium, for example, one object is fabric while the other is wood painted identically to match the fabric piece, provoking a question of which came first. The objects I am creating posses numerous tensions, such as soft versus hard, the real versus reproduction and gestural versus labored craft. The pairs might be considered derived from my strong printmaking background, including an inherent interest in multiples and reverse imagery. They call into question the blurred lines between emulation, imposters and doppelgangers, ultimately reflective of the two- sidedness to everything.
